Cobb Absorption Tester

Designed for determining the surface water absorption of various types of paper or paperboard. However, it is not intended for the accurate evaluation of the writing performance (ink receptivity) of paper or paperboard.

The Cobb Absorption Tester is designed based on the basic parameters and requirements specified in GB/T 1540-2002 "Paper and board—Determination of water absorption—Cobb method." The surface water absorption (Cobb) value of paper and paperboard is defined as the amount of water absorbed by the surface of the paper and paperboard per unit area under a certain pressure and temperature within a specified time, expressed in g/m². The specific formula is as follows: C = (G2 - G1) × 100. In the formula: C represents the Cobb absorption value; G2 is the mass of the specimen weighed after water absorption; G1 is the mass of the specimen weighed before water absorption. The paper and paperboard absorption tester is a conventional instrument for surface water absorption testing, also known as a paper surface absorption weight tester. This instrument adopts the Cobb test method among various absorption testing methods, hence it is also called the Cobb Absorption Tester.

1. The internal cross-sectional area of the metal cylinder is 100 ± 0.2 cm² (corresponding to an internal diameter of 112.8 ± 0.2 mm), the height of the cylinder is 50 mm, and the contact part between the cylinder ring and the specimen should be smooth.
2. The basis weight of the blotting paper is 200–250 g/m², with an absorption speed of 75 mm/10 min. When the basis weight of a single layer of blotting paper is less than 200–250 g/m², multiple layers can be superimposed to meet the requirements.
3. Smooth metal flat roller: The length of the roller is 200 ± 0.5 mm, and the mass should be 10 ± 0.5 kg.
